oh.mg email and why the new internet is shit

I haven't slept much and I'm making decisions based on an ever changing financial situation and mental abilities

I’m kind of making a sleep deprived decision but since the financial situation is “fixed”, I’m moving oh.mg’s email back to Nubo and figuring out what I do with the BBS mail. I’m struggling a bit with the infra and this is the main problem.

Currently the frontend including the frontend Postfix server is managed by an old laptop, it had just enough space to do the job. However, because there seems to be some high level shit fuckery the storage space keeps on running out due to the epic log sizes of various degrees of DDoS, which then takes out Postfix and makes it impossible to receive emails.

I wanted to sort out a couple hard drives to operate a virtual machine to deal with the ingress on to my network, but honestly that’s not been a priority until my full salary is kicked off in October / November time. Also, if I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure why I’m investing my time into this.

Sure, the original change over was due to being so broke I lost 30kg, years of data, and just a spiral in to hell, on the other side of that it was an activity to keep me occupied which I enjoyed as I was learning something.

Now, I’m just chasing robots, I learned what I wanted to do, and the constant need to put up more barriers to stop people like Mark “All Your Data Are Belong to Me” Zuckerberg from knocking down my site, and in this case, rail roading my mail server by stuffing the machine full of junk logs.

So right now I ask myself, why am I introducing another problem by paying for a VPS to basically just sit between one mail relay and my home connection, where the operator could have full access to all of my communications as well as an entry point in to my home data centre by virtue of Free making it a fucking bitch to add defined Firewall rules.

This is in the end because I want to keep my BBS machine on the oh.mg domain for email, and now that this entire process is outsourced, I no longer think this is worth it. I’m not going to lie, there was a moment where I was about to setup ImprovMX and just fuck back off to my AOL email address. Instead I’m just going to outsource oh.mg to people I trust, move all my extra domains to SimpleLogin, and hope that I don’t become funemployed again.

This doesn’t mean I’m stopping the BBS, this I still love, granted it honestly takes me a lot of time to make time to sit down and do something with it. While I’m there though, I enjoy it but not enough to keep up the wild creation of email servers, rules, and more annoyingly manual SSL cert renewals.

What does that mean concretely, well, I’m stopping mail.toronto.mmn.on.ca by the end of today, the BBS email is moving over to the subdomain user.mmn.ca, and no longer investing time on making DMARC work – just out of free’s SMTP relay and pray for the best.

I find this sad, because of this new internet bullshit of just constant attacks by bots from GAFAM with zero accountability that work in their favour, because I nearly just gave in to close down my website, move everything to Tumblr, and go back to AOL Mail.
